“A Cop’s Prison Letters to Cloudcroft –
Pieces of the Puzzle, and more..”
By Billy Anders
This month, Billy Anders, a long time friend and a fellow
Centurion (retired), announced on CoffeeCops.net that he
had written a book of experiences he shared with the
community of Cloudcroft, NM during his unfortunate and
unfair prison sentence for, [my personal opinion], doing his duty.
I sent off for the book from Amazon as soon as it was available.
It arrived a few days ago. I opened the book and read it from
front to back the same day.
This was a BIG mistake!!
It did not occur to me until after I finished the book that it
was written as a conversation between Billy and the
community he served at the time. The people of Cloudcroft
were so supportive of what Billy had done for them that
they continued to write to him and would not allow him
to be forgotten.
What I should have done was to have approached the book
as if I were receiving a letter from Billy, one day at a time.
If I read one chapter at a time, it would have taken a
month to read the book and it would have been well worth
my time to do so.
I read the book like I was gulping down a cold beer, when
I should have been sipping a glass of fine wine; a little at a
time. Billy’s style of writing was a very pleasant surprise.
You kind of expect old time policeman to write like they
would a police report, lots of jargon and short stiff sentences.
Not Billy, If I had taken my time reading the book it would
have been more like sitting down with him over a cup of
coffee at the Pig Stand and simply listening to him
share his experience.
I was moved by his, almost serene, thoughts and how he
handled an experience that no one could deny was traumatic.
I certainly hope that Billy Anders continues to write books
because he has a real talent for it.
I encourage everyone to buy a copy of his book.
You will not only feel inspired, you will also help
the family of a fallen officer (Billy’s partner).
