A fund raising event will be held on behalf of a fallen 27 year veteran of the SAPD This officer died after battling cancer for 2 years. As you can imagine, going through this and the associated expenses have put a toll on the family. The fallen officer I am talking about is Antonio Cruz. He passed away June 1, 2009.
He served in the Army during Vietnam and returned to San Antonio and joined the force.
He was involved with the DARE program, instructed at the Police Academy and performed as Officer McGruff in the SAFFE Program. He leaves a wife, children, step children and grand kids.
Friends of Antonio and his widow, Ingrid have decided to have a fundraiser to offset expenses incurred, and remember Antonio. Plans are to sell Chicken & Sausage plates with trimmings at a place called
Rio Club, 815 Pleasanton Rd. The event is presently scheduled for 19 July 09, Sunday, from 12pm to 4pm. Right now they are selling tickets for $6.00.
To those who have 5 Star Insurance Issues.
surprises.
When it was first offered to us, both the employee and his
or her spouse was also eligible. Many of us purchase the
insurance for both and paid the premiums for both. As it
turns out now, when G P Graham Capital Management or
Alex Perez, Jr. dropped the Standard Life in favor of the
5 Star, 5 Star refused to cover the spouses, therefore, all
this time that we have thought we were insured, we were not.
When 5 Star sent the recent letter out asking for back
premiums in order to continue the coverage on the retiree,
they were counting on the fact that the payment of the back
premiums would be cost prohibitive for most retirees. The
last time I spoke with Michael Graham, he told me that all
the retirees, except Ray and me, had elected not to continue
the coverage because they could not or did not wish to pay
the back premiums.
The premiums, I might add, that were screwed up by
Graham, 5 Star and Alex Perez. Therefore, you are being
punished for their inefficiency and I have a problem with that.
If you are a retiree whose health is good and who can seek
other insurance, that is what I would do. However, if you are
a retiree with health issues precluding you from taking out
any other insurance at all, then, if you can afford it at all, I
recommend that you pay the back premiums. Some
insurance is better than none at all. Additionally, several
officers have expressed an interest in pursuing an action
against the insurance company, the broker, etc.
It is certainly worth looking into.
If you might be interested in doing the same, please contact
me and I will share the information I have with you. Those of
you who know me, know what my feelings are about this
situation and who is ultimately responsible for this mess.
I don’t intend to let it slide. I have given Graham, Perez,
5 Star and others ample opportunity to make us whole,
I’m not playing anymore. Best wishes to all of you.

Off-duty trooper catches robber in the act
10:22 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 6, 2009
By NOELLE NEWTON
KVUE News
An off-duty trooper interrupted a violent robbery this week and kept it from being much worse.
Jeff Evans typically fights crime from the sky as a tactical flight officer with the Department of Public Safety. On Monday night, he accidentally stumbled on a robbery while driving home from work."I was actually talking on the phone with my mom, seeing how she was doing,” said Evans. “As I went up the access road, I saw a gentleman running from (a) Chevron. He was bleeding profusely from the head. He had blood all over his shirt.”
Evans immediately pulled into the parking lot, which is located on the westbound access road of Highway 71 near I-35. The man told Evans he was working at the Southeast Austin Chevron when a customer suddenly hit him over the head with a bottle of beer.
"I look back to the store and I see the female and it looks like she was screaming,” he said.
The woman, also a store clerk, was too shaken up to speak with us Wednesday. According to the court affidavit, she said the robber pointed the broken bottle at her and demanded cash and her car keys.
When the robber walked out, Evans got him on the ground.
"Once he was handcuffed, and APD got there, I just kind of stood back like what just happened,” he said.
Joseph Franklin Smith, 43, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Evans says he had only been out of jail for a month. He was serving time for a different robbery.
As for the injured store clerk, the store manager told us he had to go to the hospital, but is doing fine. “I was glad I had the opportunity to help them out and everything worked out,” he said.
Smith is in the Travis County Jail with a $100,000 bond.

4 Officers Shot in San Francisco after traffic stop.
4 officers shot, suspect dead after Calif. traffic stop
Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers
updated 8:16 p.m. CT, Sat., March. 21, 2009
OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.
Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.
The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.
At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect, who had barricaded himself in a building.
"We had SWAT officers go into that building and that's where the second shooting took place," said Thomason. The suspect was killed during the exchange, and two more officers wounded.
Colleagues await word
All four officers are in critical condition at Highland Hospital, Thomason said. Dozens of people, including other officers gathered outside the hospital awaiting word of their colleagues' condition.
Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said the department was still investigating.
"At this point we don't believe there are other people involved, but it's too early to tell," he said.
Tension between police and the community has escalated since the New Year's Day fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer. That former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer, Johannes Mehserle, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.
Violent protests erupted on the streets of Oakland in the weeks after Grant's death.
Bystanders taunt officers
People lingered at the scene of Saturday's traffic-stop shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police. A group of Oakland ministers went to the hospital to offer prayers and condolences to the family members of the injured officers and the dozens of Oakland police officers who gathered there.
They said that on Sunday morning they would urge their parishioners not to let the event tear the city apart. Pastor Raymond Lankford, executive director of Healthy Oakland, urged people to show support for the officers and their families.
"What officers do, that's a tough job," Lankford said . "They need love, they need support. They need to know the community is behind them." The mood was somber outside the police station in east Oakland as the investigation continued. Officers hugged and consoled each other.
"This is a highly sensitive situation that we're dealing with right now with our OPD family, and we're still trying to notify family members that their family members were hurt," Thomason said.
