Former officer Gerald Kuykendall dies at 81

Gerald Lloyd Kuykendall went home to be with God on
Friday, June 12, 2009, at the age of 81,
and having celebrated exactly 61 years of marriage with his
loving and devoted wife, Blanche.

He was born on November 18, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas
to Helen Leschke and Gilbert Kuykendall. He graduated
from Jefferson High School in 1945 and joined the US Navy
the same year. On June 12, 1948, Gerald married the love
of his life, Blanche Hansen.

He served as a San Antonio Police Officer along with his
father and father-in-law. Later in life he was with the
U.S. Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother,
Raymond, and sister, Kathryn. Gerald and his siblings
proudly served in the US Military during World War II.
Gerald is survived by his loving and supportive wife of
61 years, Blanche; his loving children and their spouses
Gerald Kuykendall, Jr. (Patty), Michael Kuykendall (Connie),
Priscilla Grota (Jim), Sylvia Middleton (Jeff), Suzanne
Guerra (Ray), Gerard Kuykendall, Jeffrey Kuykendall
(Amanda), and Andrew Kuykendall; seventeen
grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

During a lifetime spent loving and entertaining his children
and grandchildren with stories of a past long retired, Gerald
shared his world of knowledge and experience with his family
and friends. Always eager to engage others, it is certain that
he never met a stranger. The family wishes to extend their
heartfelt thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at Regent Care.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at
10:30 A.M. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church,
600 Oblate Dr. A reception will follow at church after
the mass. The graveside service and interment with
Military Honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National
Cemetery at 2:30 P.M.
