REMINDER - LEO Safety Act of 2004 for Retirees

This post is a couple of years old, but it's worth mentioning.

Below is an excerpt from HR-218

Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 (HR-218)

"The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 (LEOSA) has been signed into law. LEOSA is also known under its bill name of HR-218. LEOSA reportedly exempts qualified active and retired law enforcement officers from most state and local laws that prohibit the carriage of concealed firearms.

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), it is basically a state law preemption statute. LEOSA extends this exemption to any qualified law enforcement officer, as that term is defined by the act, including local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel. As a result of LEOSA, hundreds of thousands of active and retired law enforcement officers should be allowed to carry concealed firearms, and encounters with such individuals by ICE personnel will presumably increase.

LEOSA, however, does not exempt these individuals from other federal laws or regulations, including any restrictions on firearms carriage on transportation systems such as commercial airlines, nor does it extend to these individuals any new authority for the use of firearms or any new law enforcement powers. ..."
