An Open Letter from F&P Pensioners President

September 30th, 2008

RE: Pension Board Meeting

Let’s be honest about the economy and our pension.

There are some people

that look only at the negative. There are some that read newspaper articles on

the subject of public pensions in GENERAL. They take these articles for the gospel truth about ALL pensions.

Any member of the San Antonio Fire and Police Pension Fund that has worries can call the Pension Fund. Ask questions that pertain to your fund. Tell them about your worries. I have never heard of one member that the Pension Fund failed to talk to about their pension.

I attended today’s Pension Board meeting. As of September 30th our fund is down -12.5%! That is the negative side of the fund and the economy in general.

Today gains are being made in most areas including oil. The market is going to swing up and drop down day by day for a while to come.

You will still receive your normal pension.

(emphasis by CoffeeCops)

Our fund is in the top 5% of all public pension funds in the State. We started out this fiscal year at 92% funded. There are funds that would have loved to have

been in that position at the start of the fiscal year. Today we are at approximately 88% funded. I’m not sure, but I bet that 88% funded is way above national average for public pension funds. Your Pension Board is doing a GREAT job.

Your pension is safe! My personal opinion is that we will NOT receive a 13th check this year. We will receive our COLA increase in January.

I checked with the Retiree Health Care Fund this afternoon. That fund was down -7.94%. The Health Care Fund is highly diversified with only 22.74% in the stocks. Again I say we should say THANKS to the Health Care Funds Board of Directors and STAFF for a great job.

Also if you have a question about your Health Care Fund give them a call.

I know someone will speak to you about your fears and answer your questions!

Please don’t listen to surge of bad news. If and when it gets to the point for you to worry you will receive notice in the form of a newsletter from the Pension Fund in the mail.

The San Antonio Fire and Police Pensioners Association’s website will also carry that announcement!

Visit our website at www.safppa.org.

The San Antonio Fire and Police Pension Fund have their own website. Any information that would affect your pension is a positive or negative way will

also appear on www.safireandpolicepension.org!

The SAFPPA will inform you of

changes found to be fact that causes concern about your life as a retiree of either the Fire or Police Departments in San Antonio. This will include the

Pension and Health Care Funds.

I want to remind everyone not to forget to RSVP if you intend to attend the Luncheon on the 15th of October.

Also we have an important GENERAL MEETING on the 14th of October. The Nominating Committee will present the list of candidates for the coming year.

This will be a legislative year.

There is a legislative package that has passed in the Fire and Police Pensioners Association and the Pension Fund. The status and changes to this package

will be given at the general meeting.

Thanks and keep safe!

Michael M. Trainer

President

San Antonio Fire and Police Pensioners Association

PS: CoffeeCops will continue to post articles and information regarding

the status of our pension fund as we are able gather it. Please keep

checking back from time to time for any new changes.
